Today’s situation has called for the emergence of Work From Home arrangements. The concept of working remotely is totally not new, especially for freelancers or digital nomads around the world. It was once a luxury that could now be a mainstay for some! 👨💻👩💻
Working from home is great, but it can be problematic if you won’t take it seriously. Here are some helpful tips to stay productive while working from home.
Have a permanent workspace
It’s a must to establish a work area in your house. If you still have your old study desk, use it! If not, you may take a small space in your dining table since it’s often the biggest table in a home. Avoid working in the bedroom or living room to distance yourself from distractions. Lastly, keep things in order just like you would in the office.
Use comfortable working furniture
If your local market happens to sell ergonomic chairs, you might want to consider buying. This is going to be a long-term investment since might be costly. Regular chairs at home will also do the trick though. If you find them to be quite stiff, you could use a pillow to add comfort — especially for your back. Just don’t get too comfy.
Speaking of comfort, never work in your bed. The bed is for resting and relaxing. It’ll have an impact on your productivity.
Set your work hours
Even when working at home, you should set concrete work hours. Having a schedule to follow will keep you focused and pressure you to finish everything within the day. Know your most productive hour as well. Some are more productive in the morning, while some are just not morning people.
With that, you must stick to your schedule — clock in and out. There should be no distractions during work hours, and also, do not work outside your schedule.
You may create a to-do list to keep you on track or take advantage of planners. There are a lot of free apps for your phone which you could check out to help you with this. Just search for them on your phone’s app store.
Don’t be shy to use video chat
Talking face to face can help in collaboration and will make you feel less lonely while you’re stuck at home, so consider video chatting. Video conference is a hallmark of remote work. Make it a point to chat with co-workers or even clients, may it be for a quick update or just catching up.
The sense of isolation will creep in if you rely too much on plain text emails or messages. There are many video chat applications today such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, and Google Hangouts. Everyday messaging apps like WhatApps and Viber also have video calling features. Don’t worry, video calling is mostly free. Some premium features are available for purchase if you need them.
Stay off social media
Social media apps including Facebook and Instagram also have video calling services built-in. However, you shouldn’t use them during your work from home hours. Why? There’s a big chance that you’ll be scrolling through newly uploaded photos and posted updates of your friends. We can all agree that social media will a giant time suck if you aren’t careful.
Minimizing mindless use of social media helps avoid distractions, so you can focus on getting more important things done. You could consider turning off social media notifications during the day. Try muting all the phone notifications while you’re in the zone for work as well.
Keep in mind that everyone works differently, so it’s best to know your own rhythms! What’s your personal tip for working from home? 😊
